Change is unavoidable. Whether you’ve moved, gotten married, or you’ve noticed an error on your Alaska license, we’re committed to making it easy for you to ensure your ID details accurately reflect who you are.
Steps to Change Details on Your License & Real ID
- Download and fill out the application form. Don’t sign the form yet.
- Pass a vision test.
- Pay the license fee.
- Provide the necessary documents to prove your information has changed.
To change your name on an ID or license, you must be able to prove that your name has changed. All of the documents must be an original copy or certified copy of the original issued by a government agency. Photocopies and fax copies are not acceptable.
- A valid U.S. Passport
- Amended birth certificate
- Certified adoption papers, marriage certificate, court order, or divorce decree
- Certificate of Dissolution, Divorce, or Annulment
- Certificate of Naturalization
- Certificate of Name Change
To change your sex on your driver's license, you’ll need to fill out one additional form
This form must be completed and certified by one of the following:
- Physician in medicine or osteopathy
- Social worker
- Psychologist
- Professional counselor
- Physician Assistant
- Advanced nurse practitioner

You can use the DMV’s online system to update the address associated with your vehicle(s).
By Mail
You can change your address by mail by submitting the following to Auto Tags & Titles

- Your license plate number(s) and last two digits of the serial number for ALL vehicles you own. (Boat, trailer, ATV, snowmachine, passenger vehicle and truck/van)
- To change the information on your driver's license, please provide your driver's license number, printed name, and the duplicate license application.
- Your signature must be on the request in order for it to be processed.
- Note that you will not be notified that the change has been made.
If your birth date is incorrect, you must present a primary identification document as proof of your date of birth:
- An original or certified copy of a U.S. Birth Certificate. Learn about requesting a copy here.
- A current U.S. passport or Canadian passport.
- A valid U.S. passport card, issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
- Valid U.S. Military Identification for active duty, retiree, or reservist
- A court order that contains your full name, date of birth, and court seal.
- Certificate of Citizenship.
- Certificate of Naturalization.
- U.S. Government issued Consular Report of Birth Abroad.
- Passport issued from another country, with appropriate immigration documents.
- I-551 – Residence Alien Card issued since 1997. For cards issued prior to 1997, security features should be checked against ID Guide. I-688A or B – Employment Authorization.
- I-766 – Employment Authorization.
- A signed SEVIS I-20 Form with the expired foreign passport and visa.
Changing the Features on Your License
To change your height, weight, hair color, and eye color, you only need to submit an application form.
Changing Information About Your Vision
If you had eye surgery and can pass the vision test without glasses or contacts, you can have the restriction removed from your license.
