If you are an existing licensed driver, Auto Tags & Titles makes it easy to renew, replace, or transfer your license from another state, territory, or country. To obtain a duplicate Alaska Driver's License or Alaska State ID, you must prove the following elements: your full legal name, identity, date of birth, lawful status in the United States, social security number, and proof of residential address.

Renewing Your Alaska License
If your license is currently one year or less away from its expiration date, you’re eligible to renew it. Alaska does not have a grace period after a license expires. Once your license is expired, it is not legal for you to drive. You can quickly renew your driver’s license in person at Auto Tags & Titles. Walk-ins are welcome, or you can call or email for an appointment.
After completing the required steps, you will receive a temporary license. Your new license will arrive in the mail within 2 weeks.

Steps to Renewing a Driver’s License
- Fill out the application form. Wait to sign the form until you are with one of our representatives.
- Provide the documents proving your identity.
- Prove your residence.
- Pass a vision test.
- Have your photo taken.
- Pay the fee. Standard renewals are $40 cash, $41.20 debit/credit and RealID licenses cost $65 cash, $66.95 debit/credit.
- Your “under-21” license expires 90 days after your twenty-first birthday. Before you can renew your license, you must also pass an Alcohol and Drug Awareness knowledge test. You may take the Alcohol Awareness test in our office. You can attempt the test up to 2 times a day at no cost.
- You may also be eligible to renew your license online.

Alaska Licenses for New Residents
If you move to Alaska and are at least 16 years old, you’ll need to transfer your out-of-state driver’s license within 90 days. You can quickly and easily transfer your license at our office in Anchorage. Walk-ins are welcome, but you may call ahead for an appointment if you with.
Steps to Transfer an Out-Of-State License
- Fill out and submit the application form.
- Pass the written knowledge test.
- Pass a vision test.
- If your current license was issued outside of the U.S., the territories, or Canada, you must also provide proof of a passed road test.
- Have your photo taken
- Provide the required documents.
- Surrender your out-of-state driver's license
- All applicants under the age of 21 must only provide proof of a passed road test to upgrade from a permit to a license.
- Applicants under 18 must provide proof of a passed road test and have a valid permit for 6 months or longer without any violations or citations.
- After turning 21, applicants have 90 days to pass the Alcohol Awareness test to renew their license or upgrade from permit to license. You may take the Alcohol Awareness test in our office. You can attempt the test up to 2 times a day at no cost.

Road Test for Class D Licenses
- Road tests are designed to examine your ability to drive. Driving tests last about 30 minutes. We do not provide road tests at Auto Tags & Titles. You can schedule a road test at the DMV up to 24 hours in advance.

Address verification documents for a parent can be used for a minor child. If the minor's last name is different from the parent's, you must provide legal documents showing the reason for the difference. Examples would be a marriage license, divorce decree, legal name change etc.
